😂😂😂 “I am practical and disagreeable” - so relatable!
I have this problem with gift giving too - I’d love to do something wildly thoughtful/fancy/unique for my loved ones but frankly all I want at Christmas is a fancy food basket filled with pate, bougie jams and chocolate truffles……so that’s what everyone is getting!
I have sorta come to peace with the fact that while I would like to be able to get people wonderful meaningful things, I really just want to get it done. I really don't think people hate any kind of gift often, and I think it's a real opportunity for me to think too much about what people think if I start spiralling, it's more important just to do the thing. I also would really just prefer if everyone just wanted a bottle of gin for Christmas, because that's what I want to give them! But now I want bougie jams...
I thought your review of Fourth Wing was hilarious! And perfectly accurate! I’m sure I’ll break down and read it at some point. Maybe after I finally finish The Brothers Karamazov; by then I’ll need to read something that I don’t need to use my brain so much for 😂
I mean, it was entertaining! I honestly don't judge people for enjoying it! And I think the author combined all the things we like in fantasy well enough for it to be an incredibly powerful hook for millennials. But I do wonder if maybe these are tropes in every fantasy book and I just don't read enough to know??
I'm with you on being in a reading slump. You put it so well. I just don't need any more words in my head. When I finally crawl into bed at night, normally, what would be my pre-sleep reading time, I just find myself a zoning out.
Also, I have definitely bought myself at least one thing while online Christmas shopping for others. Solidarity.
Also this - "We don’t have to figure it out, we just get to receive the mystery into our lives."
I just feel guilty for not reading all the good stuff being put out there during Advent! I'm giving short shift to smart things! I'm out of the loop! But all my brain wants is to read Agatha Christie.
"I am going to be honest and say that I haven’t been reading too much simply because I feel very overwhelmed by all the things coming at me. I need less words coming into my head. I need less things being told to me. And I am now so completely done with everyone vying for my attentions and, of course, money."
IT'S ME. As I told my kids the other day: "I just need less input right now!!" 😂😂
I feel like an old computer that is too full of the tens of thousands of photos I take and every application takes way too long to startup. I'm forgetting stuff my friends tell me. I'm totally spacing on stuff my kids kids have to get to. I am full up and slowing down!
Hahaha, it was meant to land funny and it truly is one of the most annoying things my friends put up with when it comes to subjects I rant about too often! But I try not to do it on the internet.
I got recommended this Eddie Bauer coat on instagram and I really liked it! I'm going to keep the link until after Christmas and hope it goes on even more of a sale!
Do we get the Fourth Wing review in your next newsletter? I never read the TikTok trend books and then I’m always wondering if I’m missing out on something.
I really should have put it in the post that I will include a review of it here. Probably this week. Sorry, I write these bits and bants posts too quickly to think about these things! You're probably not missing out unless you do enjoy really crazy fantasy books every once in a while!
Haha, there were at least ten sentences where I just stopped and laughed out loud because...wow. But honestly, I don't judge anyone for enjoying them. I think the author does a great job of combining so much of what we enjoy from our favourite fantasy series of our youth together. I enjoyed it a decent amount and I like reading some things that don't have anything expected of me sometimes! We all need a break sometimes!
Wow - that bishop’s website looks lovely. What do you know about him, beyond the website? And btw, I zoomed past the book reviews because they were not books I’m interested in. 😉
I don't know much about him, I believe there have been a couple interesting interviews with him on The Pillar website, and he seems to be a really smart, but holy man.

you deserve bougie jams Christie!

Check out lizshiptonauthor on Instagram...her reels are spot on for identifying all the fantasy tropes 😂

It's true and so hard isn't it?
I just feel guilty for not reading all the good stuff being put out there during Advent! I'm giving short shift to smart things! I'm out of the loop! But all my brain wants is to read Agatha Christie.
If wanting to read Agatha Christie is wrong, I don't want to be right!
I mean. For real.
Amen.

SAME. I feel like I need to defragment both my computer and my brain. 😂
"If you know me, you know how I feel about bishops." I'm not sure why this landed so funny to me, but it did.
Also, I know it's not a *long* one, but I was also in the market for a Wisconsin Winter coat (the first one in years! my husband wouldn't stop pestering me to buy one!) and got this one at someone's recommendation. It came yesterday and somehow it's perfect. https://www.eddiebauer.com/p/20612550/women's-yukon-classic(r)-down-parka?color=Dark%20Loden&size=M&sizeType=&sp=1

I admit to reading Fourth Wing and to really not reading much lately as well!!! (My thoughts: bad, but entertaining 😂)

Muriel Spark is excellent!
