I'm so glad you posted this! That's the one thing Iiss about IG, your book reviews! I read Diary of a Country Priest last year with one of my book clubs (so no I decided not to read along with Close Reads this year). I also read Miss Jane Pittman with WRM and loved it! I need to also read everything Gaines especially after finding out he and Wendell Berry were friends and went to school together.

Yes! They were friends and I love that! They’re styles are so different, yet at the same time I see the similarities. I think they were also both students of Wallace Stegner?

You made my day! I’ve been thinking about Diary of a Country Priest and had the same reservations as you, so now I want to read it immediately. I actually enjoyed “a spoonful of murder” if you need a light mystery with retired sleuths

You should listen to the Close Reads Episodes they did this year. They were fantastic! And helped me understand the book even more

Have you read the Thursday Murder Club books? They also gave me RED vibes, but I loved the characters in those books so much even if the plot was a bit thin in places.

I also enjoyed A Dairy of a Country Priest with Close Reads! Although I had never heard of it before, so I was glad it came across my attention.

Oh, and I was going to say I’m glad Close Reads made me finally read it too!

I have read them and I love them! Similar vibes to that series, but a bit racier less cozy.

I don’t read as much or as fast as you, so I appreciate reviews so I can guide my scant reading life better! Any fun monarchy related reads you can recommend? Clean chick lit, or a solid biography/memoir?

The Gown is a great, 1950s London read about the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth. And if you want a good gossipy/but still well researched royal read, The Palace Papers by Tina Brown is very good.
