It’s going to the out of character for you, and it’s weird, and it’s tragic. I hope you don’t hate it!
The Space Trilogy was the last thing I read by Lewis too because science fiction. And the first time I read it I was completely at sea! Reading with the Close Reads Podcast really helped me!
I also re-read the Space Trilogy several months back! I definitely got more out of it than when I first read it, though it was still challenging in parts...hopefully the next time I reread it, I'll glean even more :) I also reread a little bit of Diary of a Country Priest, but really should just reread the entire thing.
I'm going to look into some of the books on this list! I am 100% due to reread A Canticle for Leibowitz, but some of the others look interesting to me, too. I could not get into Nayeri's book when I picked it up (maybe I was too worn out or just not in the right frame of mind?) but I want to try it again sometime since I've heard so many good things, and since I live in Oklahoma. Thanks for posting your end-of-year list, I love reading these lists. I still haven't made mine, since I'm still hopefully going to read another book before the year ends. But, I'm excited to eventually look back and make my own list, it's so fun to review a year's worth of reading!
I think the space trilogy is truly one of those special series of books that are such works of genius that they will take multiple readings to really grasp the book, and probably could be read every year and we could still go deeper each time.
I think Everything Sad is one of those books that you have to keep reading until you’re in the groove of the books style. Once you’re in, you’re in!
So many great ones! Everything Sad is entirely unique, and I've heard other people reading The Optimists's Daughter this year (maybe Close Reads did a podcast series through it?) Close Reads was very helpful for going through Diary Of A Country Priest - for illuminating symbolism and subtle but important things I missed. Due for re-reads of A Canticle For Leibowitz and the Space Trilogy!
Oh good, I feel very inadequate in describing Everything Sad, I’m glad you understand!! I read everything Close Reads does that I haven’t read before. It’s one of my weird decide once when it comes to reading, and I really did need the podcast encouragement to get back to The Space Trilogy and Canticle for Leibowitz!
Ok I just did not buy the ending to sophie wilder!! It just seemed so outrageously out of character to me.
I've never read the space trilogy! Can I count myself a true cs Lewis fan? Maybe not. Maybe this will be a 2024 goal!

Thanks for the tip! That's good to know.

A Canticle for Leibovitz has sat, unread, on my book shelf for years. Your list encouraged me to start it, and I’m really liking it so far.
