I always enjoy hearing from you. After I left IG, it was your posts I miss the most. If there’s any way we could hear a bit about what you’re reading, in these newsletters, that would be amazing!

Oh, thanks Emily! I'm so glad you found me again after leaving Instagram. I definitely want to try to focus more on writing about books more here. I just got to carve out some more time!

Your writing is absolutely amazing and if it means anything, when I see your email in my inbox, I excitedly save it for a moment in my day when I can sit and truly enjoy it...preferably with a drink and while my husband takes care of our young children. Thanks for putting your words out there.

So true! I always 'save' Christy's for a cozy moment when I can really enjoy it

This is the sweetest. Thank you so much!

I hate cooking so much, I'm decent at it, but nothing gets me green with jealous rage like hearing about families where their spouse loves to cook. I would KILL for that.

It's a REAL JEALOUSY. It's not that my husband isn't willing, but his work hours are very long and it just does not make sense for him to think about cooking when we divide house duties. But it's also soooooo mentally draining. I think about how people ate over the course of history and they probably just ate the exact same thing every single day depending on the season. And that would be great because no kid could complain about it!

Christy, I really love your newsletter. I am a working mom of two little-ish ones, and another on the way, and your words just ARE. They are true, pure, and totally validating in the "things feel hard and I need someone to know that" kind of way. So thank you! I live in the US on the east coast, so spring has sprung here, however, I'm struggling with it in a different way...the feeling of being behind because while I'm seeing everyone start their planting and pruning and sprucing, I just can't seem to find the time to get out there and do the same! Oh well...perhaps some years I just have to be satisfied with enjoying other people's lovely green and flowery things. Best wishes!

Aw, Kristine! You're really kind, I appreciate it. It's really easy to feel constantly behind when you have little kids. Honestly, I'm pretty sure I felt that way for ten straight years and just got used to it. You can just do what you can do! And I mean that in a totally genuine way. It is annoying and hard to see everyone else doing the things you don't have time for. I still feel that way about a plethora of things, like, one day I'm going to get a massage, dammit!!

Our ground is not still so frozen here in MN, but although it’s starting to warm up it just hasn’t been great weather for working outside (cue me digging dandelions in a coat & stocking cap last weekend). I just want to dump the kids outside & garden without wrestling coats onto them! Tried to clean a flower bed yesterday, but lo and behold it started raining 20 minutes in 😑

Solidarity on the meal prep. My husband is the one who likes to cook but for logistical reasons can only really do dinner duty on weekends. I’ve gotten considerably better at it over time, but it is still a chore to think about all the time & execute. I’m hoping by the time my toddler kids are teens I will have been able to foist some of cooking duty on them?

This weeks forecast is for straight up summer temps, so I don't understand why we just can't have normal spring. Is it asking too much?! But I will enjoy it more than snow! And it will probably snow this month too. It makes such a difference to your life once your kids can go outside without spending 15 min bundling up, doesn't it?? I always find myself in the spring thinking, "Why do I feel like I have so much time? Oh, it's because my kids can just walk out the door without fighting about mitts for 20 min!" I need to get more focused trying to get my teens to cook more, but it feels even harder combining their schedules with my schedule so we both have time to absorb the needed instruction for it to become automatic. Maybe this summer I'll be able to wrangle them in more!

Your newsletters are my favorite. Especially when you write about ordinary life. Especially when you are sarcastic 🙂 I always appreciate you keeping things real! It's a rare thing on the internet. Don't change a thing!

Haha, thank you Katie! This is very high praise!

LOVE the bloggy feel of your newsletter, it makes me so happy. And solidarity on everything being expensive; if it makes you feel any better, I laughed and cried when you wrote "half a mortgage payment for a tiny table invest," because $1000 in California is about what you can expect to pay in rent on a tiny bedroom with a shared bath. Oof.

Omg I know! Is $1000 the new $100??? Because I can't go to the grocery store and not spend $100, and apparently you can't buy any furniture, appliance, necessity for your home for under $1000?? It's all so radically depressing!

Ahhhh, Christy, this is your old school blog writing that I LOVE and you’re making me so nostalgic and filling me with all the warm fuzzies. And I’m 100% with you on the dinner struggle bus!! Its the mental burden for me. I’m really struggling with being the one person to figure this all out from shopping to planning to prepping to making. For some reason it’s really wearing on me lately! Gus just started baseball so it’s giving me an excuse to lean on convenience food more than I would like and maybe that’s a good thing. Anyway, solidarity! And I hope to hear some of your parenting thoughts soon! Also, T-minus 9 days until the coronation!!! 🤗

It's the mental burden. Like, what if we just ate the same thing everyday and we all got over it?! My problem is partly my own preferences for different things more often and not getting into a rut. If I just let that go it would probably be good for me. You're very sweet to say I make you feel nostalgic. But honestly the golden age of blogging was just so good. It was just regular life and people weren't trying to make themselves a brand or sell you things. Also, I would like to be a brand and sell you things. Haha, no I need to just write ordinary things! Haha, the struggle is so real and dumb.

Glad you are back!

And ditto the earlier comment, I always enjoyed your book reviews when I was on the ‘gram.

Thank you, Megan! I will honestly try to write more here about books, I just need to carve a bit more time out. But that is a goal!

Yes and Amen to ALL that you said about the making of the many dinners!!! I just got back from a few days of traveling with one of our daughters and one of the most glorious parts (aside being in a warmer climate for a few days) was that I DID NOT HAVE TO FIGURE OUT OR MAKE MEALS! Praise God for small signs of spring and days without having to feed people. 😂

Expand full comment

That is so nice!! And it does feel glorious! Part of travelling alone/just with my husband is that the best part is just not worrying about what to eat ever. Travelling with all of us still requires quite a bit of effort on my part just so we don't spend the exact amount on food as we did on flights!

I love the horse pictures, and your sentences, that don’t have to be profound to be worthwhile. I respect you for just getting something actually done and out there, when it’s way to easy to push it off.

We are a few days? Weeks? Ahead of you, in that there’s starting to be a green haze on south facing lawns and medians.... and it is making me wildly excited. Yay for spring!

Yes for spring finally being here! We made it! We should enjoy it!
